Many organizations aren’t aware that when they retire old and obsolete systems that contain sensitive data, simply deleting the data or reformatting the hard drive does not permanently remove that data. Deleting data essentially tells the computer that the space on the drive is allowed to be overwritten. Reformatting a hard drive is similar to removing the table of contents of a book; the instructions to access the data are gone, but the data is not. Critical information is still accessible to those who know how to get to it.
At CP&E, we use a hard drive sanitizing program called DoD (Dept. of Defense)
5220-22.M to completely overwrite all data on functional hard drives and devices. Functioning hard drives are then repartitioned and reformatted to verify that the drive is clearly functional and handled the DoD wipe. When a hard drive is not functional, it is destroyed beyond all repair then recycled.

We take the destruction of your data and identity seriously here at CP&E and KSA. We have taken that process one step further by purchasing our new EDR hard drive crusher that completely destroys the hard drives beyond all repair.
Once the hard drives are destroyed, they are all sent for recycling. We have destroyed over 15,000 hard drives to this day and we look forward to many more in the near future.
